How to Supercharge Your Paleo Coffee – Review of Coffee++

how to supercharge your paleo coffee

Over the past few years, it’s become increasingly popular to add fats into coffee. Various cultures around the world (Tibetans for instance) have been doing this for centuries, but it’s caught on very quickly in US, especially among those in the Paleo community.

The general idea is to add healthy fat into your morning coffee to give your brain an extra boost.

These fats can take several forms (butter, ghee, coconut oil, MCT oil, etc.). Once added, the coffee is usually blended.

Nutritional therapist Lisa Fossey says “This gives you a slower ‘high’, which will last for longer, and won’t give you the usual surge of energy that can lead to a crash. The caffeine dilates the blood vessels, allowing the good fats and oil to pass more easily into the brain, where it is thought to give increased mental awareness and concentration. MCT is metabolized to produce ketone bodies that provide energy to the body and the brain.”

I had yet to make this super coffee for myself, so trying Pure Indian Foods’ Coffee++ was my perfect chance.

Coffee++ is a new product, and it combines ghee (clarified butter) with MCT oil, so that you don’t have to do it yourself.

Paleo Salad Dressings from Nature’s Palate – Paleo Product Review

paleo salad dressings from natures palate product review

I met Darren, one of the co-founders of Nature’s Palate, a few months ago in Toronto at an entrepreneur conference. It was a really small conference (100 people), so I was shocked to find someone else running a Paleo business. Apparently Paleo is really popular these days!

Nature’s Palate is a food company focusing on quality ingredients and amazing tastes while making eating healthy easier, and so I was really excited when Darren shipped me some of their salad dressing all the way from Canada.

Paleo Drinks: Harmless Harvest Raw Coconut Water

Harmless Harvest: 100% Raw Coconut Water

What is it?

This is a raw (& organic) coconut water drink i.e., it has been heated (although what I couldn’t find exactly what temperature they keep their process under).

Coconut water is the liquid in the center a coconut (it’s mostly water with a little bit of sugar and minerals from the coconut). So, if you cracked a coconut in half, it’s the water-like liquid that would splash out.

Note that coconut water is different to coconut milk, which comes from the meat of the coconut and is high in fat.

Is raw better?

I’m not huge into raw foods – yes, it’s often more nutritious because cooking does destroy some of the vitamins and minerals as well as the antioxidants, but cooking also helps us absorb more of the nutrients. But, I love trying random new foods, so I picked one of these drinks up in Whole Foods despite its rather hefty price tag.

And boy was I glad, because this Harmless Harvest Raw Coconut Water tasted AMAZING!

Grass Fed Jerky Chews – Amazing Paleo Snack!

Paleo Snack - Sophia's Grass Fed Beef Jerky Chews

I get a lot of questions asking me for healthy snack recipes, and I have to admit, it’s often hard up with them, so I wanted to share with you this amazing “pre-packaged” snack that’s both healthy and delicious.

As Paleo and the real food movement grows, there are more and more food companies producing pre-packaged foods for us that’s supposedly healthier than the traditional chemical-laden junk we’re used to. But how do you tell what’s actually a good, healthy “pre-packaged” food and not just junk in disguise?

For me, Sophia’s Grass Fed Jerky Chews is as healthy and Paleo as it gets for something that comes in a bag – I actually found these around three years ago, and I can’t believe it’s taken this longer for me to write about it!

This is lightly flavored pure grass-fed beef without any sugar (disguised in any form, although if you want a bit of Paleo sugar in your jerky, then there’s a flavor for you), MSG, preservatives, or any other type of junk. Even purists cannot find fault with these!

Eating Evolved – Bacon Truffles

bacon chocolate truffles

I briefly met this wonderful couple who founded Eating Evolved at the Ancestral Health Symposium.  They make a variety of different organic chocolate truffles that are gluten-free, dairy-free, and soy-free.  For the Symposium, they made some special bacon truffles, which J got a box of for me.  They were of course delicious.
