Jimmy Moore with Eric C. Westman, MD
Overview of Book:
This book has everything you need to know about being on a Ketogenic diet – from what is ketosis, answering criticisms of a ketogenic diet to how to make sure you’re producing ketones.
And if you’re wondering what ketosis is, then here’s a quick definition for Keto Clarity: “a metabolic state that happens when you consume a very low-carb, moderate-protein, high-fat diet that causes your body to switch from using glucose as its primary source of fuel to running on ketones.”
As Jimmy goes on to explain in more detail, “Ketones are actually the preferred fuel source for the muscles, heart, liver, and brain. These vital organs do not handle carbohydrates very well; in fact, they become damaged when we consume too many carbs.”
The diet that induces ketosis and ketone production is called the ketogenic diet (or often shortened to the keto diet).
Who This Book is For:
Keto Clarity is for anyone interested in a ketogenic diet, and interest might fall into these 3 categories:
Keto Diets for Medical Reasons
Ketogenic diets have been around for a long time and most notably has been used to treat epilepsy (starting in the early 1900s). However, recently, it has also emerged as a possible treatment for type 2 diabetes. As Jimmy writes in Keto Clarity, “a randomized, controlled trial comparing the low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic diet to the low-glycemic, low-calorie diet over a six-month period found that those on the ketogenic diet needed less diabetes medication.”
The keto diet may also be fantastic if you’re looking for better cardiovascular health, a cure for PCOS, IBS, GERD and heartburn, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Mental diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Dementia, Schizophrenia, and Bipolar Disorder, as well as sleep disorders may also be improved by a ketogenic diet according to Keto Clarity. There is also a lot of research into whether a ketogenic diet could be used to treat cancer and autism (as well as a ton of other illnesses like Multiple Sclerosis, kidney disease, and Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
So if you suffer from any of those illnesses, then it might be worth checking this book out.
Keto Diets for Weight-Loss
As Jimmy explains at the start of this book, the ketogenic diet has some origins in the Atkins low carb diet, but the keto diet may be superior to the low-carb diet in that its focus on eating higher fats will provide more satiety and increased energy, mental focus, and mental clarity.
Keto Diets for Athletic Performance
There’s growing research on using a ketogenic diet for peak athletic performance, and some athletes are finding amazing results from following a ketogenic diet. These athletes include: Timothy Allen Olson (long-distance runner), Ben Greenfield (thiathlete and Ironman competitor), and Olaf Sorenson (long-distance runner).
Top 3 Chapters:
Chapter 19: ‘Food Shopping List For Creating Ketosis’ is a comprehensive list of foods that you can eat on a keto diet. And Chapter 20 is also fantastic because it includes a ton of recipes for nutritional ketosis (including an adapted version of my Breakfast Porridge Recipe.
Chapter 9: ‘My One-Year N=1 Experiment in Nutritional Ketosis’. In this chapter, Jimmy recounts his self-experimentation into a keto diet. During that year, Jimmy measured everything – from his own blood ketone levels, to his blood sugar and HDL cholesterol levels. And of course, he also measured his weight. He dropped 78 lbs in that year, but as Jimmy wisely points out, “[w]hen you are eating and living healthy (as you are while in ketosis), weight loss is merely a side effect, and one that’s less important than the other health benefits.”
Stories are the best, and Chapter 13 has 8 Keto Success Stories from people ranging from the ages of 19 to 61. These success stories are phenomenal and definitely worth reading.
